From Alyssa: Sage is a Australian Kelpie Catahoula Leopard Dog mix. Sage was rescued from a shelter in New Mexico where she was then put into a foster home and adopted in Colorado. New Mexico has a lot of wild-dog packs so it is difficult to pin-point her exact breed. She was listed as a Catahoula leopard dog mix, and as she has grown she looks less and less like an Australian cattle dog and more like an Australian Kelpie. So we believe she is a Catahoula – Kelpie mix, based on her sleek muscular build, whip-like tail, webbed toes, upright ears, and classic Catahoula silver quad-color markings. She has a very intense need for exercise because of her hunt and herd drive. As a young puppy, around 8-16 weeks, she was very nippy and mouthy (CHARACTERISTIC of her breed) it went away after teething ended. Incredibly intelligent dog, easy to train, but independent and stubborn at times.

I posted my bella on here she looks so much like sage its crazy. I was told for certain she was Kelpie and the vet guessed she had australian shepherd. I have looked through hundreds of pictures of dogs with her breeds but have found nothing really that has come close until I found sages picture. So now I’m wondering if she is the same mix?
Hey Ashley, I wish I would have seen your comment sooner! I looked at your pup Bella, she is absolutely adorable! When I uploaded Sage’s photo to this site I really wanted to see if people could help identify her breed… it’s been a real mystery! I noticed you mentioned her weight at 12 months, Sage is almost 9 months now and is at a steady weight of 45 pounds. Although she sounds small, shes actually all legs… and long and skinny.. and judging by your photo of Bella they appear to be the same build? Sometimes i wonder if i actually adopted the chupacabra!! If you have the opportunity I would suggest checking out this facebook site of Catahoula’s,
https://www.facebook.com/TheCatahoula
After seeing many other dogs similar to Sage, I honestly think shes Catahoula and whatever else she is mixed with i cannot pinpoint.
But Bella looks like a ‘Houla too, most Australian shepherds have speckles and so do australian cattle dogs.. but they arent known for large or varying spots, or the beautiful fawn color on Bella’s face and legs. (:
Maybe we have long distance litter-mates! Lol!

Hi, thank you! I checked out the catahoula page! I did find out there was a breeder from the same town I’m in. The possibilities are endless lol. I looked at the photo of sage at nine months she definitely is all legs lol Bella legs are definately shorter. The picture i posted of her was when she was younger I will try and post a recent photo of her. She definately looks more like a shepherd. Her size and weight matches with what I read about the kelpie.
