Border Collie Chow Chow Mix

This is one handsome Chow Chow Border Collie Mix dog even without the bandanna. A Chow Chow mixed with a Border Collie would yield a strong intelligent dog. In many cases, the mix will still have the Chow’s black tongue.

We were blessed with a chow border collie mix named Sheba. She was the most intelligent, sweetest dog I have ever owned; loyal and protective, but sweet to strangers unless we exhibited concern. She had black hair like a chow, but the white collar and face of a boarder collie with short little ears that stood up and flapped at the ends. When she was a puppy we often said she looked like a little bear cub. I would highly recommend this mixed breed. My experience was pure bliss.

I have two border collie chow mix. My tan girl looks just like a lion. She is the sweetest thing and loves kids. My black girl his the guard dog of the house. She is very protective, but sweet to those she knows and loves. I rescued both of these girls and hope to find another one just like them. They have made my first time pet experience so memorable.

We rescued a Collie/Chow mix from a shelter and have to say it is a great mix. He is the most loyal and loving dog I have ever had. He is smart, protective when he think we need it and LOVES to play with other dogs. At the request of our groomer, we did the lion shave on him and with his coloring, it looked sooooo real. I even scared a guy on the side walk on one of our nightly walks. He fell right into our house hold with 3 cats. We said you treat them with respect and he does. He is left alone with them (no crate) and treats them wodnerfully. Only thing we are still working on is control when he sees a rabbit or a squirrel. He loves to chase them and can yank the leash out of nowhere. I look forward to seeing him everyday when I come home. I miss him just by typing this.

My family has a 4 year old chow/border collie mix. He has the chow’s sense of loyalty and territory and makes a great guard dog. He barks and growls at anyone who doesn’t live with him, but will peacefully step aside if said stranger sits down, talks, etc. He demands a lot of attention, especially deeper emotional interaction because of his border collie intelligence, but puts out seemingly endless affection in return. He understands some English words and makes what I guess you could call “complex” facial expressions… very cool and intuitive. He is very fast, and runs like a deer. When two great breeds collide, great dogs happen.

I have two border collie chows and they are such wonderful dogs. I got my male as a puppy and he house-trained in one day. I brought my female home from a school where she had been abandoned. They bark when anyone comes near the house, but as soon as someone enters they wag their tales and give kisses. My female is a really cuddler and lays on the couch with me, while my male likes to sit on the floor and get his back petted. They are smart, sweet, and willing to please. My dogs are good with kids, adults, and other dogs. I couldn’t ask for better pets!

So I know that this would cheer her up. If you could help please email me at footbalgurl89{at sign}yahoo.com thank you so much!!

Hello! I am one of those fortunate canine owners who was lucky enough to find a Chow-Border mix. He is solid black and has the appearance of a Chow with the personality and intellect of a Border Collie. He is very smart, loves to please and very affectionate. His name is Buddy. His age is ten. He likes people, but absolutely adores children…..the smaller the better. On holidays when we have the entire family with us he plays with all the kids, sometimes herding them around the yard. He does not bite, seldom barking or growling. Buddy is the best pooch one could ever hope to have. When he was small he looked like a fuzzy little bear cub.

Our 7 year old border collie chow mix rescue (got him as a 2 year old) is the best dog I’ve ever had. He’s smart, loyal, incredibly good looking…. People alway ask what breed?… and he’s become a bit famous…. People always recognize my dog long before they. Recognize me! This is a ver cool dog. Very Wolfy and wonderful coloration… We suspect blue chow and border collie…. He’s got a warm blue fur…

Oh wow, just read this post today. We had to put our chow collie sweetheart down in February of this year (2014) at nearly fourteen years of age. He was the delight of our lives (well, except our children, of course). His name was Buddy also. He was so loyal and just the kind of pet we needed. We can’t imagine even thinking about getting another dog because we are so afraid it won’t come close to Buddy. We miss him with all our hearts. I love reading other stories about chow collies and their owners. Makes me tearful but happy at the same time.

I just had to put down my border collie chow mix. She was going on 14. She was beautiful, so so smart, great with my cats, sweet, loving, gentle, and hardly ever barked. She had no bad habits at all. She had become incontinent and was falling (on the cats at times) and couldn’t get back up. I miss her so much. I would adopt another one of this breed in a heartbeat! I want NO other breed except this mix!

  10. Kate says:

Ditto what everyone else is saying about this perfect mutt mix. I’ve had my rescue Chow-Border Collie for six years and she is just the best! She looks like a little black wolf or a baby bear. She has the Border Collie smarts and the Chow Chow mellowness. She is sweet as can be–she evens works as a Therapy Dog! ^..^

I have a chow//collie mix named Yaya. She is my baby girl. She isvery protective when shehas tone and loves affection and attention. I absolutely love her to death best pet I ever had.

  12. Riley says:

My Chow/B.Collie is named Ike. A friend found him roaming around a chemical plant after Hurricane Ike in Houston so he was aptly named. He is the most relaxed dog I have ever seen. Down in Texas it gets so hot that I shave him in the summer time…usually a long mohawk down his back. Everybody loves it. I have friends who want dogs but dont want the hassle of dealing with an unfamiliar type so they ask to ‘borrow’ Ike for a weekend. He’s quite the popular companion.

I was searching google to look for images of other Border Collie/Chow mixes and was stunned and pleasantly surprised to see the picture of MY DOG Simba on this website! Thats my girl Simba on the page for Chow Chow Border Collie mix. I can tell you her personality is as great as she looks. Wonderful with children, cats and dogs. Awesome temperament. This should be a new breed similar to how they made Cockapoo. Maybe called a Borchow or Chow Chow Collie. She is just a wonderful dog. Looking at the comments here seems this is common with this breed mix.

I adopted a chow collie mix from a shelter, she was the best dog I ever had. A great guard dog, very good with kids of all ages. she never chased cats. I have one friend who was very afraid of dogs and Maggie would not move when she was near her. My Maggie died in June 2012 and I am now looking to find another chow chow collie mix. They seem to make the best pets.

I adopted my Border Collie/ Chow mix in 2004. He definitely is as described by others. I rescued a Cav/Chi in 2012, Hunter trained him for me. He would bark @ him if he did anything that Hunter knew he could never have done. So cute to see. 1 yr. later, I rescued a Westie & a Wes/Mal. Hunter growls @ them if they get to rough w/ the cats. And boy, do they listen. Hunter has nurtured & protected the cats since day one (10)yrs.
He loves children, & would love for them to pet him all day. This particular mix is definitely special.
I sure do hope that I will have my boy for as long everyone else. He is more than just a dog.

I had a dog named Zoe of this mix .She was the best dog I ever owned .very smart and friendly as all get out.She had a cat for a friend .I discovered this one day when she was holding the cat by the head .She was about a year old at the time .Of course I freaked out thinking she was hurting the cat .so I grabbed her and told her sternly to drop it she did, the cat after Zoe put her down started purring and rubbing up against Zoe .I had a scare but those 2 knew what they were doing .she also fed the cat she would bring mouth full of food to it .That cat didn’t like me but she sure loved my dog …After a while I noticed that they would sleep together in the carport .darndest thing I ever did see .She lived to be 12 and then passed away I loved her she was trully a good friend and companion I still have her coller and pet shark .they hang in my bedroom .If I could have her back I would in a heart beat.

I have a 12 year old border collie chow mix. She’s all black and fluffy with a spotted tongue. She is the absolute sweetest dog in the world. She’s extremely obedient and she is very polite for a dog. She’s loyal and I’ve never had a problem with her straying, even when she was a puppy she got loose and was found sleeping on the front porch. She’s protective but her bark is worse than her bite, she’s never hurt anyone. She gets annoyed with children but she takes it like a sport and tolerates them. She’s a really good dog and is the reason I love dogs as much as I do. I fear for the day she passes on to dog heaven.. She’s old but you’d never be able to tell. I’d recommend this breed to anyone. 🙂

We had a border collie/chow best in the world. Does anyone know where you can find someone who breeds one?

    • Joan says:

We too had a border collie chow mix, extremely intelligent dog. His name was Teddy, he was mostly black with white chest and half of his paws had white like he dipped them in paint. I still mourn him.
He looked like a bear, when we walked him in the mountains people hesitated like we were walking a bear cub. Wish I could post a picture of him here.

We just got a chow collie mix! Absolutely beautiful, but he’s a real whiner! Any advice? Also, we’re in the process of house training him. There have been a few hiccups today, but nothing too bad. Any advice for making his new home a comfortable and welcoming place would be awesome! Thanks in advance!

My husband and I adopted a black chow border collie mix from the SPCA several years ago. He has been the best dog; such a blessing in our lives. He loves people and knows how to share his love. He loves daily long walks. He loves children and wants all dogs to be his friend.
My husband was sick with cancer, when he was so sick he could not get out of bed our dog would stand guard over him and not leave him except to eat and take his walk. As soon as he came back he would go back to take care of my husband.
